Am I a proper candidate for cosmetic surgery?
A good candidate has a specific need that may be improved with medical or surgical treatment. It is important to have realistic expectations and to be psychologically and physically healthy.

When is the appropriate time to have surgery?
This consideration is unique to each patient. However, the ideal patient has given considerable thought to their needs, and feels makeup, hairstyle, clothes, etc. no longer mask the area.

Will I be swollen or bruised?
The extent of the swelling or bruising depends on the particular procedure and the patients sensitivity. Most bruising only lasts one or two weeks. Swelling generally subsides after two or three weeks, but may take longer to completely subside.

Will I need to take time off of work?
Generally, patients plan to take a couple of weeks off of work. You may want to consider taking a little longer if your job involves physical work.

When can I resume exercising?
You can participate in light aerobic activity within weeks after most surgeries. You may begin more strenuous activity and/or contact sports several weeks after that. Dr. Patel will give each patient detailed postoperative instructions after surgery.

Will I be required to go to the hospital?
Most facial cosmetic procedures may be performed on an outpatient basis. This means you may be able to get to the hospital in the morning and return home on the same day.

Will I require anesthesia?
Many procedures only require a local anesthetic. However, you may choose to have general anesthetics, particularly for long procedures.

How long do I have to wait to have surgery?
The procedure will typically be scheduled weeks in advance. This allows time for the patient to undergo preliminary tests and arrange for time off as needed.

What preliminary testing is required?
You will need blood work, a physical exam, and possibly a chest x-ray or electrocardiogram (ECG). Photographs may also be required.
